About the Post
Irish & Irish American affairsThe Irish American Post was founded in 1990 by Loren Martin “Marty” Hintz. It grew out of Milwaukee’s Irish American community, bringing together news, politics, literature, film, and stories of the Irish diaspora. The original paper circulated through Milwaukee and the wider Midwest.
The Post moved online in 2001, extending the publication’s reach beyond its print readership. Today, publisher and editor Stephen Hintz continues the family connection to the newspaper his father founded.

1945–2020 · Founder of the Irish American PostFrom Iowa to the Milwaukee newsroom
Marty was born in New Hampton, Iowa, on June 1, 1945. He studied journalism at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and earned a master’s degree at Northwestern University. In 1967, he moved to Milwaukee to work as a reporter and editor at the Milwaukee Sentinel.
He became a freelance writer in 1975. His career eventually encompassed more than 125 books, with subjects ranging from travel and food to local history and the people who shaped it. With Pam Percy, he co-wrote Food Lovers’ Guide to Wisconsin and Wisconsin Cheese.

A life beyond the byline
Marty and Pam also shared a long-running Shepherd Express column, “Boris and Doris on the Town.” He served as president of the Society of American Travel Writers in 2001–02. At home, his interests included elaborate circus dioramas and Pampered Produce, the River Hills farm he and Pam started in 2009.

Irish culture as community life
Marty helped found Milwaukee’s Irish Fest and worked as its public relations director. Through the Post, he gave writers a place to cover Irish and Irish American life. In the festival’s early years, his family welcomed visiting musicians and storytellers from Ireland into their home.
The Post’s memorial scholarship carries that interest in writing forward. Its archived announcement invited creative work from young people—a fitting link between a working journalist’s life and a new generation of storytellers.
The story of Finding Loren
One of Marty’s most personal projects concerned his father, First Lieutenant Loren Hintz, whose aircraft was shot down in Italy during World War II before Marty was born. Decades later, the family’s search located the crash site and recovered the plane and remains.
After Marty died in September 2020, Pam Percy completed the documentary he had hoped to make. Finding Loren preserves both that wartime history and the family’s search for a father and grandfather they had never met.
The documentary’s story: WUWM’s interview and reporting.
